Structuralist Analysis

Monde Special Mamon "Toughie Softy" TV Commercial

The Structuralist Approach in analyzing literature delves within the world of language. Structuralists believe that language - words - have deeper meaning and structure.

The commercial being analyzed here using the Structuralist Approach is Monde Special Mamon's 'Toughie Softy'. It opened to a scene where a boy was watching a television show when his mother came in after collecting clean laundry and told him to finish his assignments first. The boy turned the TV off and proceeded to answering his math assignment; a narration, with the boy's voice, simultaneously played. The boy described his mother to be 'strict' while she asked him to check his answer on equation number 5. He then later described his mom to be a "softy" despite being somewhat strict. Then, his mom emerged from the kitchen bringing a plate of Monde Special Mamon.

A narrator, with a different voice, continued the boy's narration by saying ". . . parang Monde Special Mamon" immediately after the boy's description of his mom being a 'softy' and her emergence with a plate of the mamon. The commercial invites the viewers to go and try the mamon by comparing it to a loving and kind mother who is soft at heart. The word 'softy', as used by the child to describe his mother, in connotation means that his mom is also a lover of the 'soft mamon'.

The commercial implicitly conveys to the reader that they will never be disappointed with the product - as a mother never does to her child.
